Urban housing has become one of the central challenges of contemporary cities, shaped by the interaction of planning systems, regulatory frameworks, and broader urban processes. Questions of affordability, access to housing, and the distribution of living conditions increasingly reflect the ways in which planning decisions influence urban development.
The main theme of ICUP 2027 focuses on the role of urban planning in shaping housing provision and its spatial and social outcomes. Particular attention is given to the relationship between planning frameworks and built realities, as well as to the ways in which housing conditions relate to urban inequality and everyday life. Within the main theme, contributions are welcomed in relation to the following thematic areas:
Urban planning approaches, governance models, and regulatory environments shaping housing development in contemporary cities.
Challenges of housing affordability, access to housing, and the relationship between planning, policy, and housing supply.
Spatial distribution of housing opportunities, patterns of inclusion and exclusion, and emerging forms of socio-spatial differentiation.
Connections between housing, neighborhood context, and everyday urban life, including aspects of comfort, accessibility, and well-being.
Housing-related challenges across different urban settings, including medium-sized cities, rapidly growing urban areas, and cities in transition.
